The Original Romany Gypsy Cooking Pot

Traditional Cast Iron Cooking, Recreated for Today

There is something special about cooking in a proper cast iron pot. Heavy, reassuring and made to hold heat beautifully, this is the kind of cookware that turns a simple stew, casserole or soup into something made to be shared.

Our pot belly Romany Gypsy Cooking Pot is reproduced directly from an original Judge cooking pot dating back around 150 years. Every detail has been recreated to retain its wonderful traditional character, including the distinctive brass name plates and classic hanging bail handle.

The pot and lid are made from solid cast iron, with a beautiful cream enamelled interior and a tough matt black enamelled exterior. The black finish has been specially chosen to retain the appearance of traditional cast iron while giving you the protection and convenience of modern enamelled cookware.

And unlike traditional bare cast iron, there is no seasoning required. Simply cook, wash and enjoy it.

Use it in the kitchen, put it in the oven, or suspend it over an open fire. This is traditional cookware made to be genuinely useful today.

From Kitchen to Campfire

Suitable for open fire, gas, induction, ceramic, halogen, electric hobs and oven cooking.

Maximum cooking temperature: 280°C / 535°F.

Why You'll Love It

This isn't just a decorative reproduction. It is a proper, substantial piece of cast iron cookware designed to be used and enjoyed.

  • Solid cast iron pot and lid
  • Superb heat retention and even cooking
  • Beautiful cream enamelled cooking surface
  • Tough matt black enamelled exterior
  • Authentic heritage-inspired detailing
  • No seasoning required

It is particularly good for the kind of food cast iron was made for — slow-cooked casseroles, rich stews, curries, soups, broths and hearty one-pot meals.

One Pot, Almost Anywhere

One of the best things about this cooking pot is just how versatile it is.

Use it on:

  • Open fires
  • Gas hobs
  • Induction hobs
  • Ceramic hobs
  • Halogen hobs
  • Electric hobs
  • In the oven

Cast iron holds heat extremely well, so medium to low heat is usually all you need. Once the pot is hot, it will continue cooking efficiently at a lower setting.

Cast Iron Performance Without the Fuss

Traditional bare cast iron can be wonderful to cook with, but it needs regular seasoning and careful maintenance.

This pot gives you the heat retention and cooking performance of solid cast iron with the convenience of an enamelled surface inside and out.

There is no need to build up a seasoning layer and no need to oil the whole pot after every use. The cream enamel interior also gives you a smooth, practical cooking surface that's much easier to live with day to day.

It's heritage cookware without the heritage maintenance.

Made for Open-Fire Cooking

This is where the traditional pot belly shape really comes into its own.

Suspend the pot from a suitable cooking tripod over an open fire and simply raise or lower the chain to control the cooking temperature. For slow cooking, a good bed of glowing embers gives beautifully steady heat without the fierceness of large flames.

It's ideal for outdoor stews, casseroles, soups and broths — whether you're cooking in the garden, camping or simply enjoying a long evening around the fire.

Tip: Never heat the pot empty. Always have food, oil or liquid inside while it is over the heat.

Simple Care & Cleaning

Because the pot is enamelled, looking after it is straightforward.

After cooking, allow it to cool naturally and wash using warm water, mild washing-up liquid and a soft sponge. Dry thoroughly before putting it away.

For stubborn food residue, soak the pot in warm water for 15–20 minutes before cleaning. Avoid steel wool, abrasive pads and harsh cleaners, as these can damage the enamelled surface.

Metal utensils are also best avoided. Wooden, silicone or other enamel-friendly utensils will help keep the interior looking its best.

Never put a very hot pot directly into cold water, as the sudden temperature change can damage the enamel.

Read our Cast Iron Cookware Care Guide .

Before first use: Remove and discard the protective silicone tubes fitted to the wire handle, then wash the pot in warm soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the pot need seasoning?

No. The pot is enamelled inside and out, so unlike traditional bare cast iron cookware there is no need to season it before use or continually build up an oil coating.

Can I use it on an induction hob?

Yes. The solid cast iron construction makes it suitable for induction cooking. Because induction heats quickly, bring the pot up to temperature gradually and keep it centred on the cooking zone.

Can I cook with it directly over an open fire?

Yes. The pot is designed for open-fire cooking and can be suspended from its bail handle using a suitable tripod, chain and hook. Glowing embers rather than fierce flames usually give the best cooking results.

Can it go in the oven?

Yes. The pot is suitable for oven cooking up to a maximum cooking temperature of 280°C / 535°F.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No. We recommend washing it by hand with warm water, mild washing-up liquid and a soft sponge. It is also not suitable for microwave use.

What is it best for cooking?

Cast iron is particularly good for slow and steady cooking. Stews, casseroles, curries, soups, broths and other one-pot dishes are where this pot really shines.
