How to Care for Brass, Bronze and Applied Finishes
Care of Applied Finishes and Croft Products
Lacquered Brass and Bronze (PB, PG)
Regular cleaning with warm soapy water will help maintain the general appearance, and an occasional application of a good wax polish will help to protect the finish. Environmental or atmospheric conditions, such as sea air or industrial pollution, can affect the lacquer. If the lacquer starts to break down, we recommend removing it with paint stripper and cleaning the article using a metal polish (e.g., Autosol or Brasso).
Unlacquered Brass and Bronze (PBUL, PGUL)
Initially polished, this finish will naturally dull and darken over time. To retain the polished appearance, regular cleaning with a metal polish (e.g., Autosol or Brasso) is required.
Plated Finishes (CP, SCP, PN, SNP, PRL)
Regular cleaning with warm soapy water helps maintain the appearance. If needed, a proprietary chrome polish (e.g., Autosol) can be used.
Living Finishes (AB, AGD, DAB, RBMA, TB)
Normal wear and handling reveal the metal below, creating an aged effect. An occasional application of beeswax polish can enhance and protect the finish.
Other Finishes (SB, MB, DBMA, IBMA, AN, ORB, DAN, DORB, SBUL)
Regular cleaning with warm soapy water and applying wax polish gently will help to protect the finish.
Atmospheric Conditions
Sea air and environmental factors can prematurely deteriorate finishes, especially external and window fittings. Regular cleaning is essential. Recommended finishes for these conditions include:
- Polished Brass, Unlacquered (PBUL)
- Chrome Plate (CP)
- Polished Gunmetal, Unlacquered (PGUL)
- Polished Nickel (PN)
- Real Bronze (RBMA)
